I figured I should write a few more tutorials for my site. Just to have something to update. So here goes.

Tutorials for these two L&O:SVU icons that I posted in . . . some entries earlier.

_

How to make this icon using gradients and a few brushes. This tutorial is for Photoshop 7 or Photoshop CS (8). If you use Paint Shop Pro, I'm sure what I'm about to do here will translate to PSP also. It's a really simple icon, but it's NOT for beginners.

This tutorial is for wickedandcruel who asked me how I made this icon so politely. So I figured, why not write a tutorial so others can see how I did it as well?? =] And I was very much inspired by interview_ (who makes gorgeous icons) to write tutorials. Just cause I can. ;]

01 | I started with this base. This has been cropped, resized, and smoothed out. In other words, this image has been fixed. If you're unsure how I created this base, please refer to my cropping and smudging tutorials for beginners.

____________________

02 | Create a new layer and add a brush by goth_clark in a light pink color #FFE6E6. Note: the brush is put on a black background so it can easily be seen because of such a light pink.

-->

____________________

03 | Now choose another brush by the same person, with the same color #FFE6E6 and put it on a new layer. Then take a round brush about 65 pixels in diameter and erase the parts with Olivia and Elliot. I tend to use brushes from the same person on a specific icon to make it easier to remember where I got the brushes from.

-->

____________________

04 | Create a new layer (yes, again) and use a brush from elli in (oh my!) light pink, #FFE6E6 again.

-->

____________________

05 | Looks kinda ugly. =[ Eewww. Yuck. So (ahhh!) make a new layer and set the blending mode to screen. Then add a gradient. If you're using Photoshop, it's one of the default gradients, in the Pastels set. If you're using some other programs, the five colors for the gradients are (in order):

Yellow: #FAE5B0
Pinkish-orange: #F4BEB2
Pink: #EE95AC
Lighter purple: #B67DAD
Darker purple: #836AAF

-->

____________________

06 | Eeepsss!! Where in the world did they go??! Duplicate the base TWICE and drag both of them to the very top, on top of all the brushes and the gradient layers. Desaturate both of them Image > Adjustments > Desaturate and set both of them to soft light.

-->

____________________

07 | Now, on top of all the layers, create a new layer (are you getting tired of this?) and choose a default round, soft-edge brush, in white #FFFFFF, about 35 pixels in diameter and brush down the middle of the icon, between Olivia and Elliot. Then go to Filter > Blur > Guassian Blur and choose about 3 px. Adjust the opacity to 90%, or however you like it.

-->

08 | Now add another layer and choose a heart brush by jeweledicecream. Using the same color as the other brushes #FFE6E6, add it in between Olivia and Elliot.

-->

____________________

And there you have it! A finished icon! It's one of my more simple icons. Short, and sweet.
I even named the icon after jeweledicecream because I am sooo not original when it comes to text and names (notice I have no text on this icon, and you will not see much text on many of my other ones either).

Another one, using pretty much the same style.

01 | I started with this base. This has been cropped, resized, and smoothed out. In other words, this image has been fixed.

I used a cap I made myself using PowerDVD. The cap really sucked because when played on the computer, the DVD had the worst quality ever. Seriously, I thought I was gonna die because the cap was so bad. Even when I cropped and resized it, and sharpened and smudged, and did all that other stuff, it was still horrible. You can tell in the base below. But don't worry, the art of making great icons is that no one will know you had a really really horrible cap.

02 | This tutorial is very much like the Jeweled Love one, cause I made them at the same time. Create a new layer and use a brush from disorderedmind with the color #FFE6E6. Use the erase tool to erase the part with Olivia in it.

-->

____________________

03 | *dies* So ugly. =[ Create another layer and use the same color, with a brush from _joni.

-->

____________________

04 | Getting better, but still sooo ugly. Make a new layer and add another brush by _joni in the same color.

-->

____________________

05 | Next up, a gradient! This one is from crumblingwalls. The colors are #60517C and #81506D.

-->

____________________

06 | Duplicate the base TWICE (like in the Jeweled Love one) and drag both of them to the very top. Desaturate</b> both of them Image > Adjustments > Desaturate and set both of them to soft light.

-->

____________________

07 | Ooohhh!! Shinnyyy!! Create a new layer, using the color white and a brush from _joni, I added the brush to the right side of the icon. You can pretty much use any brush here, since all you really want is white border on the right. So just pick any square-ish or rectangular-ish brush you have in your brush pallette and use it. No need to be picky.

-->

08 | Using the same brush, I brushed it three times on a new layer and then sharpened it once.

-->

____________________

09 | Next, choose a white, round, soft-edge brush about 24 px and apply it to the bottom right corner of the icon. Gaussian blur it about 5 px.

-->

10 | Now for text.

Text: Sweet
Font: Another Typewriter
(dafont)
Blending Options > Gradient Overlay: #FFFFFF & #671D66

-->

11 | Then another layer, using the same font, but a black color this time, and tiny font size, type in . . . uhh . . . anything. It can't be read anyways. That's the point. I put it "all the things she said" cause that was the song that was playing on my playlist. Creative, eh?? *pokes*

-->

And you're done! Phew! That took more steps than I remembered.
