Dragons Playing Cards
This is what I started with for my deck of playing cards design. These—which took me a whole day's work to do were abandoned because my teacher didn't think they were part of a system. I know he's right, but I hate myself for wasting so much time on them. And I hate it even more that I couldn't use any of it.

Then I spent another day redoing the dragons, almost completely changing my whole design. So these were what I ended up with. Click for a larger image.

And yet, they're still not working right. I'm frustrated. Every single king, queen, and jack has to be different from each other. Four kings, four queens, and four jacks. Four suits. Twelve dragons, all different. Right now he said the three dragons I have are too similar to each other, which means I have to draw more dragons—different ones—so people can tell them apart.

When he was critiquing me, I was going through two days with 3 hours of sleep, and all I could do was stare at my dragons and wonder if I should bang my head against the table or if I should tear up my paper and make a dramatic exit. I wanted to half laugh and half cry. There's just no winning in life. Part of me wanted to say "fuck life!" and vanish into the night like Batman and then the rest of me is thinking that I need to go home and Tae-bo all this frustration out.

As much as I'm starting to hate this project, I'm determined to see it through. What a milestone this will be. 53 cards, including the joker, and a package design, all part of a [hopefully awesome] system. What the hey, I might be so proud of it I'd print these babies out and use them.

You can do it! You've made it too far to quit now! If you can go back and trash whatever you had before and redo it once, you can do 12 different kings/queens/jacks!

Nothing will stop you! Not even death!

Dude, whatever. I think your top chest/egg/dragon design could be drawn together with a few other elements. Dragons, eggs, and treasure are KNOWN to go together, duh.

And I like your revamped design as well. (The eggs as your numbers? Genius!) And have you thought about experimenting with color for your different face cards or suits? It could definitely help you when you go to do your face cards. A play on one color for a suit definitely helps when you have to do three different dragons but only focus on one color. (An accent color for face cards can also be used to help them stand out and differentiate the jack/queen/king? Just off thinking off the top of my head.)

I think you've got this locked down, you just don't know it yet. :D

The original suits I had for that variation were eggs, swords, gold/treasure, and tooth. I seriously thought the drawing style could work, considering all of them had yellow and red in them, but the teacher wanted something that was simpler and had even similar features, such as one color, white lines going through them, which was what I did for the second variation.

And have you thought about experimenting with color for your different face cards or suits?

First I had only one color. Boooo. Haha. Then I took your suggestion and went for an orange and blue. Complements. Hurray. Now I'm having shades of the colors, such as light orange, orange, and dark orange (to match my background, which has a darker yellow, yellow, and white). I wish I didn't have so many colors though. Sometimes I get awfully confused as to what color I was supposed to be using for a certain element. I'm struggling to get some of my suits working together due to their weights (like the egg seems heavy compared to the tooth, which is thinner in width). I will post an update on them later! :) Thanks for the critiques and suggestions. They really helped.
